Event Details

A one-day workshop for
Foster Parents & Adopting Parents, Early Childhood Care Workers,
and Daycare Workers,

using the Circle of Security logo
model to support children in care, foster families, and adopting families

featuring
Dr. Bob Marvin & Dr. Bill Whelan

Bob Marvin Bill Whelan

This workshop will begin by providing a "user-friendly" review of attachment theory and research on children developing in their birthhomes. The review will be based on presentation and discussion of videotaped parent-child interaction.

This will be followed by extensive review of our current state of knowledge about the special challenges involved in parenting foster and adopted children, again illustrated by extensive use of videotapes.

The final part of the presentation will focus on the Circle of Security® Intervention for caregiver-child relationships, a prevention and early-intervention protocol that is thoroughly based on attachment theory and research.

The Circle of Security protocol has been found to be especially helpful for foster and adoptive parents, and for the professionals who support those placements. In a manner similar to this workshop, the intervention is especially effective because it uses review of videotaped parent-child interactions to coach parents in understanding the complex and often puzzling cues and behaviours used by foster and adopted children.
